Shawn's background

A life of experience, turned into a clearer way forward.

Shawn Houston believes that growing older should be about living fully, not simply preparing for what might go wrong.

With more than 30 years of experience spanning healthcare, senior advocacy, insurance, community engagement, and family caregiving, Shawn has spent much of her career helping people navigate some of life's most important transitions. Today, as the Founder of Houston Legacy Institute, she has transformed that experience into a mission: helping individuals and families prepare for aging with greater confidence, clarity, independence, and peace of mind.

Her books grew from both professional experience and a deeply personal understanding of caregiving. After helping care for her own parents, Shawn saw firsthand how quickly families can find themselves making critical healthcare, financial, caregiving, and end-of-life decisions without the information or preparation they need. She decided there had to be a better way.

The mission

Move from “We’ll deal with it when the time comes” to “We have a plan.”

Legacy Readiness workshops and educational programs

Through Houston Legacy Institute, Shawn helps seniors, caregivers, families, churches, community organizations, healthcare organizations, and other partners move from “We’ll deal with it when the time comes” to “We have a plan.”

Her interactive Legacy Readiness workshops and educational programs make difficult subjects approachable and actionable. Participants are encouraged to organize essential information, communicate their wishes, understand available resources, prepare for caregiving, protect what matters, and have important family conversations before a crisis forces them to.

Living well, too

A Baby Senior perspective.

But Shawn's message is not only about preparing for emergencies. It is also about living well while we are here.

As a proud Gen Xer and self-described “Baby Senior,” Shawn is helping redefine what aging can look like for the generation entering its next chapter. She speaks candidly about health, fitness, style, financial preparedness, purpose, caregiving, technology, family, faith, and creating a life that remains vibrant well beyond 50.

The philosophy

Aging is inevitable. Being unprepared isn't.

Whether she is speaking to a room of seniors, working with caregivers, partnering with a church or community organization, or encouraging a 50-something “Baby Senior” to start preparing now, Shawn brings the same message: Prepare for tomorrow. Protect what matters. And keep living today.

That is the heart of Houston Legacy Institute, because a legacy is more than what you leave behind. It is how well you live, how well you prepare, and how well you care for the people you love.
