Her story

Shawn Caprice Houston is the founder of Houston Legacy Institute LLC, a licensed health and life insurance professional in 25 states, and the author of When Love Becomes Caregiving: A Memoir and Planning Guide for Families.

Her story begins in Michigan, where she was raised by parents who were determined to give her every advantage they hadn’t had. Her father, Leroy Houston, worked. Her mother, Dorothy Houston, made sure Shawn knew that education was the way through. They took her on tours of HBCUs before she made her college decision — because they wanted her to see that world and feel it. She chose Morgan State University, where she earned a degree in Accounting. She has never once questioned that choice.

After graduating, Shawn built a career that crossed industries and disciplines. She spent seven years as a Sales Manager at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, leading a team of 12 and managing major accounts including Kroger and Walmart. Then, after spending two years as a full-time caregiver for her parents, she made a pivotal decision: she would turn her caregiving experience into a career.

For more than 20 years, Shawn has worked at the intersection of healthcare, community, and family — in Medicare Advantage, senior primary care, and community health outreach. She held director-level roles at CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Oak Street Health, where she helped launch clinics serving thousands of Atlanta-area seniors and was ranked Top 13 nationally in patient acquisition.

She is a first-generation college graduate, a Morgan State University alumna, and a woman who has sat with families in some of the hardest moments of their lives — as a caregiver, as a healthcare professional, and now as an author.

Her debut book, When Love Becomes Caregiving, is her promise to her parents. And her companion planner, Leave Nothing to Chance, is her gift to every family who wants to be more prepared than hers was.

Shawn is based in Atlanta, Georgia.

I didn't set out to write a book. I set out to keep a promise. My parents gave me everything they had. When it was my turn to take care of them, I wanted to do it right — and I wanted to make sure other families had what we didn't: a plan. This book is for every daughter who is carrying more than she shows. Every son who doesn't know where to start. Every family that loves each other but hasn't had the conversation yet. It's not too late. But it's also not too early.
